It's Battlefield 1.

Now, personally I'm super cool with this. I don't think I've seen many games set in WWI outside of Verdun and a few strategy games, (and or Toy Soldiers if you want to count that). Most shooters tend to go towards WWII, I assume, because it's easier to write a more engaging story about Allied forces pushing further into Europe than it is to write a story about sitting in a trench all day waiting for the trench-foot or the chlorine gas to kill you. For the record, I know that WWI wasn't just trench warfare, that was mostly just on the West and Eastern fronts. For the most part, the Great War remains unexplored territory for a FPS and I'm actually quite giddy with some of the opportunities this presents us for its multiplayer.

My only fear, is that it's DICE Stockholm making this. Now, I know they made Battlefront, which looks great, but they also made Battlefield 4, and that was a horrendous buggy mess at launch. I'm hoping that DICE Stockholm took a few pointers from DICE LA and even Visceral and try to release a game that isn't broken at launch. Otherwise, my only other concern is the inevitable Battlefield Premium BS that EA always tags on. Hopefully the latter doesn't intrude too much.

What do you folks think? Is this the right direction for Battlefield? Personally, I welcome the change, since it'll hopefully not be generic futuristic shooter #12, which seems to be the direction CoD is going. Perhaps this will spark interest in revisiting the World War settings. I'd be pretty down for that. (On a sidenote, why did they pick such awful music for this trailer? Nothing against Seven Nations Army, but the song seems really out of place for a game set in WWI, and even if they were going to use a more modern song, why not something just as brutal as the war itself, like say Paschendale?)

I think it is the right direction to take in terms of making things fresh.  WW1 isn't exactly as cut and dry as WW2 is.  The later can be seen as sort of good vs evil with the allies battling the Nazi regime.  WW1 is more along the lines of men killing each other for petty land grabs.

It was also where the destructive power of the machine gun was truly discovered, as thousands of men would charge the battlefield only to be mowed down.  In fact, it was where a lot of new age instruments of death were implemented.
